Root Canal Post-Op Instructions – Lorain, OH

Promoting a Smooth Root Canal Recovery

The recovery process is just as important as the treatment itself. Following your root canal post-op instructions will help promote the healing process and reduce your risk of infection. You can count on our team to provide you with thorough aftercare guidance that will be personalized to your unique situation, but we also wanted to give you a general idea of what to expect so you can plan accordingly. These are tips that we would recommend for any patient recovering from a root canal.

Diet Restrictions After a Root Canal

We’ll always administer a local anesthetic for root canal treatment, which means your mouth will likely be numb for another 30 minutes or so after your root canal. Avoid eating anything until after the numbness fades, or stick to mild, soft foods that don’t require much chewing.

You should also try to avoid biting down with your root canal treated tooth before your general dentist has had a chance to provide you with your permanent crown or filling.

Managing Soreness Post Root Canal Treatment

You may feel sore for two or three days after your root canal. The discomfort should be mild and can be alleviated by taking over the counter pain relievers as directed. We find that following a schedule like this is most effective:

  • Start with 2 – 3 tablets of 200mg Ibuprofen, Advil or Do not take all three at once.
  • Three hours later, take 2 tablets of 500mg Extra Strength Tylenol.
  • Another three hours after that, take 2 – 3 tablets of 200mg Ibuprofen, Advil or Take the same type of pain reliever that you started with.

If you experience any swelling, you can apply a cold compress to the outside of the treated area (for up to 48 hours or until the swelling is under control).

Oral Hygiene Following a Root Canal

It’s important to continue brushing and flossing after your root canal. Oral hygiene mitigates the bacteria content in your mouth and ultimately helps prevent infection and other recovery complications. You can be gentle as you clean your teeth, but please remember to:

  • Brush twice daily
  • Floss once per day
  • Rinse with a non-alcoholic mouthwash at least once per day
