Root canal therapy is the most famous endodontic treatment (endodontics is a dental specialty that deals with the soft pulp inside a tooth). But there are other treatments that are just as valuable and more complex. For example, if you had a failed root canal, your care team might determine that you need root canal surgery, which is also known as an apicoectomy. This procedure involves removing the tip of the tooth’s root and is more invasive than a traditional root canal. What can you expect as you are healing from this restorative procedure? This blog post provides helpful information and aftercare tips.
Manage Pain and Discomfort
After your apicoectomy, you can expect to experience some soreness or swelling near the affected tooth. Your endodontist may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe medication to help you feel more comfortable. Apply an ice pack to your cheek in intervals to reduce swelling, and avoid strenuous activity for a few days. Most of the discomfort should subside within a week or so.
Eat the Right Foods (and Avoid the Wrong Ones)
Choosing soft and nutritious foods will help protect your surgical site and promote healing. Opt for items such as yogurt, mashed potatoes, applesauce, or soups, which are gentle on your mouth and require little to no chewing. You should steer clear of crunchy, spicy, or hot foods, as well as anything that requires excessive chewing.
Keep Up with Oral Hygiene
Maintaining clean teeth and gums is essential during your recovery. Carefully brush and floss while avoiding direct contact with the surgical site, and use any recommended mouth rinses to help minimize infection risk. If your endodontist provides specific instructions about oral hygiene, follow them closely to ensure optimal healing.
Get Enough Rest
Your body needs extra rest to recover from surgery, so prioritize sleep and relaxation. Elevate your head when you lie down to help reduce swelling, and take it easy for at least the first 24 – 48 hours after your procedure. Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous exercise until your care team says it is safe.
Attend All Follow-Up Appointments
Regular checkups with your endodontist allow your provider to monitor your progress and address any concerns. Do not skip scheduled visits, even if you feel better. These appointments help your recovery to stay on track and allow for early identification of any complications that might arise.
Follow Other Directions from Your Endodontist
Your endodontist may give you specific instructions tailored to your unique situation. These could include guidelines for medication, activity restrictions, or wound care. Always follow their recommendations rather than any general guidelines that you may find elsewhere.
Recovering from an apicoectomy can take a few weeks. Be patient with yourself, follow care instructions from your endodontist, and look forward to enjoying the long-term benefits of your procedure.
